Google today honored renowned Indian poet Balamani Amma on her 113th birth anniversary with a special doodle dedicated to her. Kerala based artist Devika Ramachandran created this doodle.
Balamani Amma was born in 1909 in Thrissur district of Kerala.
Amma never studied. She stayed at home and studied under her uncle Nalapat Narayan Menon.
At the age of 19, Amma was married to V.M. Nair, who was the Managing Director and Managing Editor of Malayalam newspaper 'Mathrubhumi'.
Balamani Amma's first poem 'Koppukai' was published in 1930. She was 21 years old then. She later published over 20 collections of poetry, as well as other works such as translations.
All her poems make women into powerful people.
She has received many awards and honors for her writings including Padma Bhushan, Sahitya Akademi Award and Saraswati Samman.
She is known as 'Amma' (Mother) and 'Muthassi' (Grandmother) of Malayalam poetry.
Amma (1934), Muthassi (1962) and Mazuvinte Katha (1966) are her most famous works.
Her daughter Kamala Das is also a well-known novelist.
